TEACHING (Mentor Program)

Hey everyone, Steven here.

Thank you for your interest in studying with me!

Teaching and mentoring one-on-one is literally one of my favorite things to do in the world.

And I have been extremely lucky!

I have had the opportunity to work with some extremely inspiring and dedicated students,

Many of whom have gone on to win DownBeat Student Music Awards, receive full scholarships to the college of their dreams, and overall —

just take their musicianship to the next level.

Due to my professorships at Berklee College of Music in Boston and The New School in NYC,
I have very limited availability in my private studio at this time.

HOWEVER —

I always reserve a few spots for inspired and dedicated students to work with me in a one-on-one mentorship capacity. Topics of study include:

  • Bebop language development

  • Jazz Piano Voicing Techniques

  • Jazz Theory & Improvisation

  • Large Ensemble (Big Band, Orchestra) Composition, arranging and Orchestration Techniques

  • Career Coaching

  • Social Media Marketing

  • The “Lead Sheet to Large Ensemble” Method

  • Audition Preparation

  • Recording Preparation

I have continued to work with Steven for over a year now because he is consistently engaged and present in every lesson. He also has a skill for communicating difficult ideas and concepts to students, while also making sure they know what to be doing during their practice time to see the results in the playing that they want. This year and a bit has been the greatest and most concentrated period of growth I have experienced in my years of being a musician. I leave every lesson feeling inspired.

Steven is truly a special educator. His ability to answer any musical question with breadth and depth to his response is extremely enriching as a student. While studying together, I have seen my musicianship grow substantially - I leave every lesson feeling inspired, and grateful for such a wonderful teacher!
— Parker Story: Eastman School Of Music Graduate, Current Studio Member
Steven is a master musician and artist. Since taking lessons from him my playing has improved significantly and he’s taught me a lot about arranging as well. I felt like the investment I made into Steven’s lessons was one of those investments that will last a lifetime.
— Abe Imansjah: Professional Musician (California), Former Studio Member
Steven is not only a great player but also an amazing teacher. His ability to push and motivate while staying supportive and uplifting is special.
— Rafi Mayer: Hartt School Of Music, Former Studio Member
Throughout our time working together, Steven has been a wonderful mentor. He is incredibly supportive and knowledgable in any facet of music we discuss - I am a better musician and person today as a result of our lessons.
